However, it may be surprising to learn that there is more than one kind of a headache. Knowing which one a person has can help him or her to better cope with it by using the appropriate means.

Common Headache Types

Here are some of the more common headache types:

  • Migraines: Usually affect one side of the head and are known for throbbing and pulsating head pain. They are severe and can cause a person not to be able to perform a normal daily routine. Nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound are usually present. Some people have visual disturbances before a migraine occurs.
  • Sinus headaches: These headaches can be accompanied by a fever and are brought about by inflammation due to an infection in the nasal cavity.
  • Tension headaches: This is the most common kind of a headache. It can feel as if there is tightness pressing in around the head, the back of the neck, and the temples. They are generally mild and do not interfere with day to day activities.
  • Rebound or medication overuse headaches: Ironically enough, taking too much medication to treat headaches can actually cause headaches to occur.
  • Cluster headaches: These are chronic in nature and come in cycles. They come on all of a sudden and affect only one side of the head. The affected side can also produce a watery eye and runny, congested nose.

Where to Find Headache Relief

Much success in caring for headaches has been seen in the field of upper cervical chiropractic care. The upper cervical spine, particularly the C1 and C2 vertebrae, can often be the root cause of headaches. If they are misaligned, they can put stress on the brainstem and, in turn, the central nervous system can be affected. By correcting this misalignment, a person may possibly become headache free. Most patients report a definite improvement after receiving an adjustment.
