Meniere’s disease, a disorder of the inner ear, causes a set of symptoms that includes tinnitus (ringing in the ear), hearing loss that comes and goes, and severe vertigo.  Vertigo can disrupt almost every area of life, particularly tasks that involve movement.  This makes day-to-day tasks like going to the grocery store or playing with your children uncomfortable at best, and impossible at worst.  As with any chronic and incapacitating condition, Meniere’s disease sufferers can also develop depression or anxiety.

What’s The Cause of Meniere’s Disease?

The exact cause of Meniere’s disease is still unclear.  It appears that a buildup of an abnormal amount of fluid occurs in the inner ear.  This can be due to many reasons, including poor fluid drainage, abnormal immune response, viral infection, migraines, or head injury.

Upper Cervical Chiropractic: A Natural Meniere’s Solution

Upper cervical chiropractic differs from a more general approach in that our focus is on the uppermost vertebrae in the spine.  The C1 (atlas) and C2 (axis) vertebrae can contribute to Meniere’s disease in a few possible ways.  These vertebrae sit just beneath the skull at the very top of the neck, and a misalignment here can affect the way the eustachian tube is able to drain.  Additionally, the atlas and axis provide protection for the brainstem.  An upper cervical misalignment can cause irritation of the brainstem, hindering the normal signals that travel between the brain and body.  This can be a contributing factor in balance and coordination, which can lead to vertigo.

In a research study that looked at 300 Meniere’s disease sufferers, all of them were found to have an upper cervical misalignment.  In 291 out of 300 patients, upper cervical care made a significant difference.  This improved their ability to go to work, drive a vehicle, and have a positive relationship with their spouse.
