All that a person experiencing a migraine can think about is how to get rid of it quickly. Often, people try over-the-counter or prescription medication. While this may provide temporary relief, it does not address the underlying cause of migraines. This means they will likely occur again.
Managing Migraines
Here are a few ways that may help lessen the severity and frequency of migraines.
Hydrotherapy: Try taking a very hot shower, as hot as you can handle, for a few minutes. Then, turn the hot water off and just use cold for a few more minutes. Alternating between hot and cold for about 20 minutes improves the circulation in the body. Another way to do this is to put your feet in very, very cold water and use a hot compress on your neck. This allows the blood to flow to the feet and alleviates pressure in the head.
Omega 3s: Omega-3 fatty acids are healthy fats that reduce inflammation in the body. Inflammation can often be the reason for headaches and migraines. Such things as flax seed oil, fish oil supplements, and fresh salmon can be added to the diet.
Upper Cervical Chiropractic and Migraines
This is a special field of chiropractic that focuses on misalignments in the upper neck vertebrae. Popping and twisting of the spine is not necessary. If either the C1 or C2 vertebra is out of alignment, they may be exerting pressure on the brainstem causing the brain and body not to communicate properly. Blood flow to and from the brain can also be hindered creating the perfect set-up for a migraine to occur.
Once the misalignment in the neck is corrected, the body begins to heal itself from the damage done. It can communicate properly once again. Blood flow is normalized. Upper cervical has been shown to help alleviate a variety of health problems, including migraines.
